New Zealand Adventure!

Sleeping in an airport can be pretty frustrating. Try sleeping with the lights on, on a bench at the Kids Corner, with people constantly talking, and an announcement every 5 minutes. But despite the difficulty I got some sleep and in the morning (Monday) we washed up and got our rental vans.
Our beds in the airport. . .Kids Corner benches :)

NEW ZEALAND MONEY!!!

Jucy Rentals picked us up and took us to pick up two vans. The vans are free and we just have to pay for gas, ferry tickets, insurance, and the GPS (that really don't work well). For the first half of the trip in my van, Danielle drove and after a few hours it was time for me to drive for the first time on the opposite side of the road! I was a little nervous but after getting behind the wheel it came naturally. It doesn't feel much different at all.

Our rental van place...they gave us a plastic doll to take with us and take pictures with to help promote them...we had a lot of fun with it

My first time driving on the left hand side of the road :) It wasn't as hard to get use to as I though

The first day on the road was a little bumpy. We wanted to stop off at a few places but the GPS decided to take us off roading a few times. Eventually our van led the way and I managed directions using a map. The old fashion way! The first stop we made was in Hamilton at the Hamilton Gardens. The gardens were beautiful and a nice place to stretch our legs.

Next we stopped off in Rotorua and saw a few mud pools and hot springs but by the time we made it there everything was closing for the night.

Did I mention how bad they smelt? Kinda like rotten eggs...yuck!

Since everything was closing down we headed out to Taupo for a dinner break. We ate at an interesting pizza place and then made the game plan for the evening. The plan was to drive through the night and get to Wellington that night. We drove all night taking shifts (I had the late shift) and made it to Wellington a little after midnight. Here we found the ferry and decided to spend the night in the vans behind a gas station. Little did we know that in the morning (Tuesday) we would get a ticket. But no worries the ticket was $40 and splitting that between all of us makes it $6 each. Not bad for a place to stay for a night (its cheaper than a hostel).

The trip so far had been quit exciting and now that we have everything underway its going smoothly. We spent Tuesday morning hanging out and found some free wifi to do some trip planning and book a few things along the way. Then we caught the ferry from Wellington (North Island) to Picton (South Island). It was a 3 1/2 hour ferry ride and the weather was far from favorable...I started to get a little motion sick so I took a nice nap!
In the car waiting for the Ferry (and yes I'm on the drivers side haha)

Once we arrived in Picton we drove for another 2 hours to Kaikoura where we stayed the night in a hostel. It was nice to actually shower for the first time since we left Lennox. Talk about some smelly kids! The hostel was pretty nice. The other van got a room for three and we got a room for two and crammed in to save some money. Two single beds for four people...two in one bed, one on the floor, and one in the other bed.

Room number 18. . .best room in the hostel

Four deep. . .two on the bottom bunk, one on the top, and one on the floor
we sure know how to save money!

It worked pretty well and in the morning we are splitting up for the next leg of our journey. I'm the only driver in my car and we are heading off to the glaciers in the morning (a 6 hour drive) and in the morning we have our climb! The other group is heading to a different glacier to do a walk/hike around it.

I am loving this New Zealand road trip!!!

As one dream ends another begins!

This morning I left Australia for the first time in three months! My alarm didn't go off in the morning and my entire cabin over slept. By the time we did wake up we had about ten minutes to load the bus, clean out the fridge, and pack any odds and ends that we still needed. The morning was a little hectic to say the least but no worries we stayed calm and got stuff done in no time and off we were!...I miss my home in Lennox Head already but I am ready for my next adventure to begin. We landed in New Zealand around 5:25pm NZ time and after getting through immigration and customs (with just a few bumps) we are settling into our airport chairs for the night! Our first night here we are staying the night at the airport and picking up our camper van in the morning. Thank goodness they have showers here so we can wash up and head off for a week worth of adventure in this amazing place. We don't have much of a plan but playing it by ear is what makes it more exciting! The only plans we have are to ice climb on the 28th and sky diving on the 29th and catch a plane back to Auckland on the 30th...then its back to the States. But in between there we are learning how to drive on the opposite side of the road, sleeping in a van, exploring the North and South islands, and soaking up every minute of this amazing journey. Can't wait to share more of this trip with everyone but until then HAPPY EASTER!!!

My Last Weekend Down Under!

Wow time has really gone by fast! Lennox Head has truly become my home away from home. I wouldn't mind finding sand from this beach everyday for the rest of my life. This was my last weekend in the land of OZ and I will never forget it...this entire trip has been such a blessing to me.

Thursday we had a lot going on and was a very hectic day but was also a very fun day. After my very last class of the semester (World Literature) we all played volleyball. . .cabin against cabin!

GOT IT!

Service!

We had out big going away/end of the year party with all of our local Aussies invited on Thursday night. There were a lot of awards handed out and gifts for all of our professors. I got the awards for most improved volleyball player! and also an award for surviving a snake encounter. . .not so funny. We also got t-shirts and of course FOOD! We had sausage, steak, chicken, and kangaroo. Along with some side dishes. For desert we had Tim Tams...of course...and cake. It was a well put together event from our even management class.

Everyone here has become like family to me

I wont ever forget them!

Our professor, his wife, and our graduate assistant did a presentation to say goodbye to us. . .and oh what a presentation it was! They picked out one thing about each person whether you were short, had a drunk night, or just has an embarrassing moment and "gave us a present" (theoretical...we didn't really get the present). One girls got a stool to help her reach things because she is short, another got a little black book to keep all of her social interactions in line. The presentation made everyone laugh and no one was offended. One of the guys got skype minutes so he can skype his girlfriend instead of go fishing more, another person got double sided sticky tape to keep her bathing suit top on, there was aloe given to the excessively burn people, a compass to one girl who got lost while drunk, motion sickness medicine for people who threw up on trips, and mobile minutes for those who always called home. It was a pretty funny presentation that brought all of the unfortunate events that happened on the trip to light.

Going out to the Pub!
Supermodel pose from Carlo!

After the party we all headed to the pub for a few drinks, dancing, and music of course!

Friday was spent laying out in the sun and enjoying our last few days here. I finished my World Literature paper in the morning and am now officially done with school for the semester. I also did lots of laundry, and started to pack my suitcase...and it is very hard because I don't want to leave.

In the afternoon we all went sailing on the lake :)
Our group was the example group haha

the evening was ended with a bonfire on the beach!
On our last day here in Australia...Saturday...we had a bunch of cleaning supplies brought to camp along with a dumpster! Cleaning out the cabins day and finishing to pack. After we finished cleaning I went out to the beach for one last look at the ocean and to relax a little in the sun.
